Identity Crisis — BrainHook Glossary card

When an individual questions their core sense of self, often triggered by major life changes, loss of community, or shifts in belief systems. This process can destabilize a person's entire understanding of who they are, where they came from, and their place in the world. It is frequently accompanied by cognitive dissonance, deep reflection, and the search for alternative frameworks that align with their evolving identity.

What this means in real life

A college student who excelled in their parents' chosen pre-med track suddenly questions whether medicine is actually their passion, feels lost about their future, and struggles to know who they are outside their family's expectations.

What it isn’t

An identity crisis is not a clinical diagnosis or mental illness requiring treatment. It's a normal developmental process, not a permanent state of confusion or a sign of serious psychological disorder.

Commonly misused online

Social media often treats 'identity crisis' as a joke for any minor wardrobe change or hobby shift ('I'm having an identity crisis because I dyed my hair'), trivializing the genuine existential confusion the term describes.
