Hygrothermal performance describes how a material simultaneously manages heat transfer and moisture movement under varying environmental conditions. It combines 'hygro' (relating to moisture) and 'thermal' (relating to heat), evaluating how trapped air and porous structures resist heat flow while regulating humidity. This metric is vital for building materials, composites, and insulation, where interrupted heat paths and moisture control determine long-term durability and efficiency.

What this means in real life

A basement wall that stays dry and doesn't develop mold during humid summers and cold winters demonstrates good hygrothermal performance; one that sweats, cracks, or grows mold has poor performance.

What it isn’t

It is not simply insulation value or moisture resistance alone. Good hygrothermal performance requires both thermal control and moisture management working together—a material can be a great insulator but still fail if it traps moisture and rots.

Commonly misused online

Often conflated with 'breathability' or 'vapor permeability' as if those alone determine performance. In reality, hygrothermal performance depends on the entire assembly design, not just one material's vapor transmission rate.
