Gram-negative coliforms are a group of rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacteria that lack peptidoglycan in their outer membrane and ferment lactose with gas production within 48 hours. They are primarily environmental organisms found in soil, water, and the intestines of animals, serving as indicators of fecal contamination rather than direct pathogens themselves. The group includes common genera such as Escherichia, Klebsiella, and Enterobacter.

When a water treatment plant detects gram-negative coliforms in tap water samples, it signals possible sewage contamination and triggers immediate investigation and public health alerts, even if no illness has occurred yet.

What it isn’t
