What this means in real life

When a solar flare sends a burst of charged particles toward Earth, the resulting magnetic disturbance can knock out GPS signals for a few hours or create spectacular northern lights visible much farther south than usual.

What it isn’t

It is not a physical storm with wind or rain—it's an invisible electromagnetic disturbance. It also does not originate from Earth's own magnetic field, but from the Sun's activity interacting with our magnetosphere.

Commonly misused online

Social media often conflates minor geomagnetic activity with apocalyptic scenarios, claiming storms will cause widespread blackouts or harm humans directly, when most events are mild and primarily affect high-altitude systems.
