The frontoparietal control network is a brain system linking the frontal and parietal lobes that orchestrates higher-order cognitive functions like attention, decision-making, and adaptive behavior. It dynamically integrates goal-directed information with external stimuli to enable flexible responses to changing environments. This network is central to executive control and supports the brain's ability to reorganize based on experience.

What this means in real life

When you're driving and suddenly notice a child running toward the road, this network kicks in to redirect your attention from the radio, override your current speed, and execute an emergency stop—all in seconds.

What it isn’t

It is not the same as the default mode network (which activates during rest and mind-wandering) or sensory networks (which process incoming sights and sounds). It's an active control system, not a passive background process.

Commonly misused online

Often conflated with 'executive function' as a whole; actually, the frontoparietal control network is one neural substrate supporting executive function, not synonymous with it.
