What this means in real life
When ChatGPT-4 launched, it was frontier AI because it could handle complex reasoning tasks better than any previous public model. A year later, newer systems surpassed it, and it was no longer considered frontier—the frontier had moved forward.
What it isn’t
Frontier AI is not synonymous with 'dangerous AI' or 'artificial general intelligence.' A frontier model is simply the most capable system available now; it may still have significant limitations and may never achieve human-level reasoning across all domains.
Commonly misused online
Social media often uses 'frontier AI' interchangeably with 'AI that will replace all jobs' or 'AI that's about to become conscious,' conflating technical advancement with existential risk or sentience—neither of which the term actually implies.
