Forensic investigative genetic genealogy is a specialized methodology that combines genomic DNA analysis, computer database technologies, and traditional genealogical record research to identify human remains or unknown suspects. By tracing family lineages across three or more generations using markers like Y-chromosome STRs or mitochondrial DNA, investigators narrow down potential matches to solve cases where traditional identification methods have failed.

What this means in real life

Police recovered DNA from a decades-old murder scene. They uploaded it to a genealogy database, found a distant match, traced the family tree forward, and identified a living relative who turned out to be the perpetrator.

What it isn’t

It is not the same as traditional DNA fingerprinting, which directly matches a suspect's DNA to crime-scene evidence. This method works backward from unknown DNA to find relatives, then narrows down suspects through genealogy.

Commonly misused online

People often treat it as foolproof identification, but it only narrows suspects to a family group—police still need traditional evidence to prove guilt. Online discussions frequently ignore that innocent relatives can be wrongly investigated.
