Firmicutes

A diverse phylum of gut bacteria, including Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, that ferment fiber to produce butyrate and support gut health. Their metabolic role depends on species balance, not one single 'obesity germ.'

Firmicutes — BrainHook Glossary card

Firmicutes is a major phylum of bacteria, many of which are Gram-positive, including important gut inhabitants like Faecalibacterium prausnitzii. These bacteria ferment dietary fiber to produce short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate, which support gut health. The phylum is diverse, and its role in metabolism depends on the balance of species within it, not a single organism.

What this means in real life

When you eat fiber, bacteria in your gut—many of them Firmicutes—ferment it and produce short-chain fatty acids that your body absorbs for energy and gut health.

What it isn’t

These are not a single species or disease-causing organism. Firmicutes is a broad bacterial category containing thousands of species, most harmless or beneficial; calling someone 'infected with Firmicutes' misrepresents what they are.

Commonly misused online

Social media often claims high Firmicutes-to-Bacteroidetes ratios directly cause obesity, oversimplifying a complex relationship between microbiome composition, diet, genetics, and metabolism.
