The extracellular matrix is a complex, non-cellular network of proteins and carbohydrates that surrounds and supports cells in tissues. It provides structural integrity, facilitates cell signaling, and regulates processes like growth, migration, and wound repair. While it acts as a scaffold, it is dynamically involved in maintaining tissue architecture and function across organs like the heart, lungs, and skin.

What this means in real life

When you cut your skin, the extracellular matrix acts like a biological scaffold that holds the wound together while new cells migrate in to repair it—without this structural framework, tissues would fall apart.

What it isn’t

It is not a living cellular component or a membrane. The extracellular matrix is non-living material secreted by cells; it exists outside cells and is distinct from the cell membrane that surrounds individual cells.

Commonly misused online

Often conflated with 'collagen' alone, when actually collagen is just one major protein within a much larger, complex network that includes elastin, water, and many other molecules.
