Epithelial Cells

Cells forming the protective lining of your gut, skin, and other body surfaces that act as a barrier against invading microbes.

Specialized cells that form the outer layer or lining of body surfaces and internal organs, including the skin, digestive tract, and respiratory system. They create a physical and chemical barrier that protects underlying tissues from pathogens, toxins, and mechanical damage. Epithelial cells are tightly joined together and are constantly renewed.

What this means in real life

When you scrape your knee, the flat cells lining the outer layer of your skin are damaged. Your body replaces these epithelial cells over days, which is why the wound gradually heals and new skin grows back.

What it isn’t

These are not muscle or nerve cells—they don't contract or transmit electrical signals. Epithelial cells are structural and protective, not contractile or conductive.

Commonly misused online

People often use 'epithelial' to mean 'skin cells' only, but epithelial tissue lines your lungs, stomach, blood vessels, and many other internal surfaces—not just the outer skin.
