It originates from skin cells, mucus, feces, or gametes and is widely used in ecology and conservation to detect species presence, including rare or elusive ones, across diverse ecosystems.

What this means in real life

A wildlife manager tests water samples from a river to detect whether an endangered fish species still lives there, finding its DNA traces without needing to catch or see any fish.

What it isn’t

It is not the DNA of dead organisms buried in soil or fossils—it refers specifically to genetic material actively shed by living creatures into their immediate surroundings in detectable concentrations.

Commonly misused online

Often conflated with 'ancient DNA' or 'fossil DNA,' when in fact it describes contemporary genetic traces from living populations, not historical remains.
