Emotional Jealousy — BrainHook Glossary card

Emotional jealousy is the visceral, anxious feeling triggered when a person perceives a threat to their romantic or emotional bond with another, often tripping a fear of loss or replacement. It arises across relationship types, from monogamous marriages to polyamorous networks, and can manifest as a hot, body-level spike even when one believes they've managed the emotion through self-work.

What this means in real life

A partner feels hurt and anxious when their significant other confides deeply in an ex-friend or shares vulnerable feelings with a coworker—not because anything physical happened, but because they fear losing their special emotional role.

What it isn’t

It is not the same as sexual jealousy (fear of physical infidelity) or possessiveness. Emotional jealousy is about feeling displaced in someone's inner world, not about controlling their behavior or denying them friendships.

Commonly misused online

Often conflated with 'emotional cheating' as if they're identical, when emotional jealousy is the *feeling* of threat, while emotional cheating is the *behavior* of crossing boundaries—two related but distinct concepts.
