Ecological Resilience

A system's ability to absorb shocks and disturbances while maintaining its core functions and structure.

The capacity of an ecosystem to withstand external pressures—such as climate change, disease, or physical damage—and recover to a functional state without fundamentally changing its identity or losing key species and processes. High resilience means a system can bounce back from disturbance; low resilience means repeated or compounded stressors may push it toward permanent collapse.

What this means in real life

A forest with diverse tree species and healthy soil can recover from a drought or wildfire and regrow; a monoculture plantation stripped of topsoil by erosion may never return to forest and instead becomes grassland or bare ground.

What it isn’t

Resilience is not the same as resistance—a resilient system may still be damaged or changed by stress, but it can recover; a resistant system simply avoids damage in the first place. A reef can be resilient yet still bleach.

Commonly misused online

Often used to mean 'toughness' or 'never breaking,' when it actually means 'ability to recover after breaking.' People tweet 'nature is resilient' to dismiss climate concerns, ignoring that repeated shocks can exceed any system's recovery capacity.
