Dysregulated

Unable to manage or control one's emotions, impulses, or responses in a stable way; emotional reactions that swing sharply or feel overwhelming.

Dysregulated — BrainHook Glossary card

A state in which someone struggles to regulate their emotions, impulses, or physiological responses, resulting in intense, unstable, or poorly controlled reactions. Dysregulation can manifest as emotional volatility, impulsive behavior, difficulty calming down, or heightened sensitivity to triggers. It appears across many conditions—trauma, ADHD, personality disorders, and mood disorders—and is not a diagnosis itself but a symptom or pattern.

What this means in real life

A teenager receives critical feedback on homework and immediately feels crushing shame, then lashes out angrily at a parent, then withdraws for hours—unable to step back and respond proportionally to the situation.

What it isn’t

It is not simply being moody, upset, or having a bad day. Dysregulation refers to a persistent difficulty managing emotional intensity or impulse control, not occasional emotional reactions that most people experience.

Commonly misused online

Social media often uses 'dysregulated' as a casual synonym for 'upset' or 'angry,' flattening a clinical term that describes a genuine struggle with emotional control into everyday mood language.
