When you read a job posting that says 'we value work-life balance,' deconstruction would ask: what does 'balance' actually mean here? Does the company's hiring practice contradict this claim? What assumptions about work and life are hidden in that single word?
What it isn’t
It is not simply 'taking something apart' or 'destroying' an idea. Deconstruction does not claim all meaning is meaningless; rather, it shows that meaning is more complex and context-dependent than it first appears.
Commonly misused online
Social media often uses 'deconstruct' to mean 'criticize' or 'break down into parts'—as in 'deconstructing celebrity culture.' While related, this casual usage misses the philosophical rigor of examining how meaning itself is constructed.
