The D/H ratio is the abundance ratio of deuterium (a heavy hydrogen isotope) to ordinary hydrogen in a substance, typically water. It serves as a critical tracer for determining the origin and formation temperature of planetary bodies, as deuterium levels vary with distance from the star and physical conditions in the early protoplanetary disk.

What this means in real life

Rainwater falling in different regions has slightly different D/H ratios depending on temperature and evaporation patterns. Scientists can use these fingerprints to trace where ancient groundwater came from or how climate has changed over millennia.

What it isn’t

This is not a measure of how 'heavy' water is overall, nor does it indicate radioactivity or danger. The ratio is simply a natural abundance difference between two stable isotopes, present in all water and organic matter.

Commonly misused online

Some posts conflate D/H ratio with 'heavy water' toxicity, implying high ratios are poisonous. In reality, the ratio is a scientific tracer tool; natural variations pose no health risk.
