Cryptographic provenance chains are immutable, blockchain-based records that verify the complete history and authenticity of digital assets. By embedding cryptographic signatures at every stage of creation and transfer, they establish a trusted lineage that confirms an item is genuine and not a synthetic or altered version, which is critical for legal evidence integrity.

What this means in real life

A luxury watch manufacturer embeds a cryptographic record of its production, each sale, and certification into a digital ledger. A buyer can scan the watch and verify every owner and authenticator in its history, proving it's genuine and not counterfeit.

What it isn’t

This is not simply a serial number or traditional receipt. Those can be forged or lost. Cryptographic provenance chains use mathematical verification that makes forgery computationally infeasible and creates a permanent, tamper-evident trail.

Commonly misused online

People often conflate this with 'blockchain' as if they're synonymous. Cryptographic provenance chains are a broader concept; blockchain is one implementation method, but provenance chains can use other cryptographic architectures.
