Crustal Provenance

What this means in real life
A geologist finds sand on a beach and analyzes its mineral grains; by identifying quartz from granite and feldspar from volcanic rock, they determine the sand came from two different mountain ranges upstream—that's establishing provenance.
What it isn’t
It is not simply the age of a rock. A grain can be very old but still have a young provenance if it was recycled from older crust into a younger deposit; provenance is about source and history, not just a single date.
Commonly misused online
Often conflated with 'age' or 'dating'—people assume provenance means 'how old is this?' when it actually means 'where did this material originally come from and what happened to it?'
