Commensal bacteria are non-pathogenic microorganisms that inhabit a host's body, typically the gut, and coexist without causing harm. They have evolved to suppress inflammatory signaling and maintain a stable, beneficial relationship with the host immune system. The term 'commensal' describes this functional, non-harmful interaction rather than a specific taxonomic group, distinguishing them from opportunistic pathogens that cause disease when overabundant.

What this means in real life

Bacteria living on your skin eat dead skin cells and oils, thriving in that environment while you remain unaffected—they're just quietly coexisting with you.

What it isn’t

Commensal bacteria are not parasites (which harm the host) or mutualistic partners (which benefit both). They also aren't necessarily harmless in all contexts; some can cause infection if they enter a wound or compromised area.

Commonly misused online

People often use 'commensal' to mean 'harmless' or 'neutral,' but the term specifically describes a one-way benefit relationship. A truly neutral microbe that neither benefits nor harms would be different.
