These environments include protoplanetary disks around young stars, debris disks around mature stars, and the material between a star and its orbiting bodies. Chemical and physical processes in these regions shape planetary composition and system architecture.
What this means in real life
When a new star forms, it is surrounded by a swirling disk of dust and gas—the circumstellar environment—where particles collide, stick together, and eventually grow into planets over millions of years.
What it isn’t
It is not the star itself, nor is it the same as interstellar space (the vast emptiness between stars). A circumstellar environment is specifically the material and space bound to and orbiting one particular star.
Commonly misused online
Often conflated with 'habitable zone' or 'where aliens live,' when it simply means the material around any star—most of which is inhospitable dust and gas with no life present.
