Carbonaceous chondrites are a rare class of primordial meteorites distinguished by high concentrations of water, organic compounds, and presolar grains. They formed early in the solar system's history and retain unaltered material from the protoplanetary disk, including grains from dying stars like silicon carbide and graphite.

What this means in real life

When scientists analyze a meteorite that fell to Earth and find it contains water, amino acids, and carbon-based molecules alongside silicate rock, they classify it as this type—helping them understand what building blocks were available when planets formed.

What it isn’t

People sometimes assume these meteorites are mostly made of coal or pure carbon. In reality, they are predominantly silicate rock with only a small percentage of carbon-bearing material mixed in.
