Base-pair Bonds

Chemical connections between the two strands of a DNA molecule, holding the genetic code together in its characteristic double-helix shape.

Hydrogen bonds linking complementary nitrogenous bases across the two strands of a DNA double helix. Adenine pairs with thymine (two bonds), and guanine pairs with cytosine (three bonds). These weak but numerous connections hold the DNA structure together while allowing the strands to separate during replication and transcription.

What this means in real life

When a cell copies its DNA, enzymes unzip the double helix by breaking these bonds between bases—like opening a zipper. Once separated, each strand serves as a template to build a new matching strand, with bases pairing up again through the same bonding pattern.

What it isn’t

These are not covalent bonds (the strong bonds within the sugar-phosphate backbone). Base-pair bonds are much weaker hydrogen interactions, which is why DNA strands can separate without breaking the molecule's structural integrity.

Commonly misused online

Often described as 'strong bonds holding DNA together,' when they're actually weak enough to break and reform repeatedly. This misconception makes DNA seem more rigid than it is—it's actually quite dynamic.
