Apparitions — BrainHook Glossary card

Apparitions are visual manifestations of supernatural beings, ghosts, or spirits, typically appearing suddenly and vanishing without physical trace. The term originates from the Latin 'apparere,' meaning to appear, and historically denotes a ghostly figure seen by a living person, distinct from hallucinations or dreams.

What this means in real life

A grieving widow reports seeing her late husband standing at the foot of her bed one night, clear as day, before he fades away—a common experience reported by people in deep mourning.

What it isn’t

Not simply seeing a photograph, video, or reflection of someone. An apparition is a direct visual perception of a presence that the witness interprets as a ghost or spirit, not a recorded image or mirror effect.

Commonly misused online

Often conflated with any blurry photo or unexplained shadow as 'proof of ghosts,' when most reported apparitions lack photographic evidence and occur in subjective, unverifiable circumstances.
