Antifungal Resistance
When fungi develop the ability to survive antifungal drugs that once killed them, making infections harder to treat.

The capacity of fungal organisms to withstand or survive exposure to antifungal medications that would normally inhibit or kill them. This occurs through genetic mutations or acquired traits that allow fungi to neutralize drug effects, reduce drug uptake, or pump drugs out of cells. It is a growing clinical concern, particularly with species like Candida auris, limiting treatment options for serious infections.
What this means in real life
A patient with a persistent yeast infection takes antifungal cream repeatedly, but the infection returns because the fungus has adapted to survive that medication—requiring a different drug to finally clear it.
What it isn’t
It is not the same as a person being allergic to antifungal drugs. Resistance means the fungus itself has changed and the drug no longer works; an allergy means the person's immune system reacts badly to the medication.
Commonly misused online
Social media often conflates it with 'natural immunity' or suggests probiotics alone can overcome it, when in fact resistance is a microbial adaptation requiring medical intervention or alternative medications.
