Anhedonia

Anhedonia is the unwelcome absence of pleasure or interest in things you used to care about, often seen in depression and burnout. It's more than just boredom—it's a deep lack of feeling joy.

Anhedonia — BrainHook Glossary card

Anhedonia is a clinical symptom defined as the persistent inability to experience pleasure or interest in activities that are typically rewarding. It is a core feature of major depressive disorder and burnout syndrome, reflecting a neurobiological disruption in the brain's reward pathways, and is distinct from simple fatigue or temporary disinterest.

What this means in real life

A musician who once spent hours playing guitar suddenly finds it boring and stops practicing. A parent who loved cooking no longer feels joy preparing family meals and goes through the motions mechanically.

What it isn’t

It is not laziness, apathy, or simple boredom. Someone with this symptom *wants* to feel pleasure but cannot access it—the desire is there, but the emotional reward is absent or muted.

Commonly misused online

Often conflated with depression itself rather than recognized as one symptom among many. Social media posts sometimes use it casually to mean 'I'm bored today' rather than a persistent inability to feel pleasure.
