Angular Velocity

The rate at which something spins or rotates around an axis, measured in degrees or radians per unit time.

The speed at which an object rotates or revolves around a fixed axis, expressed as the angle swept per unit time (typically radians per second or degrees per second). It describes how quickly rotational motion occurs, independent of the object's distance from the axis.

What this means in real life

A ceiling fan blade spinning at 60 rotations per minute has a constant angular velocity; a figure skater spinning faster during a jump increases their angular velocity by pulling their arms inward.

What it isn’t

It is not the same as linear velocity (straight-line speed). A point on a spinning wheel's rim moves faster linearly than a point near the center, even though both have the same angular velocity.

Commonly misused online

Often conflated with 'rotational speed' without distinguishing the mathematical units; social media sometimes uses it loosely to mean 'how fast something spins' without specifying the angle-per-time measurement.
