How readily and intensely the amygdala—your brain's alarm center—fires in response to perceived threats or novel stimuli.

The degree to which the amygdala, a brain structure involved in processing fear and emotional salience, activates in response to threatening, novel, or emotionally significant stimuli. Higher reactivity means stronger neural responses to potential dangers or unfamiliar situations; lower reactivity suggests a more muted alarm response. This trait varies across individuals and is linked to anxiety, temperament, and social behavior.
What this means in real life
A child with high amygdala reactivity might jump at sudden loud noises, feel intense dread before the first day of school, or take much longer to warm up to strangers—their brain's threat-detection system is simply more easily triggered.
What it isn’t
It is not the same as anxiety itself. Amygdala reactivity is a neurobiological measure of how the brain responds; anxiety is the conscious feeling that may or may not follow. Someone can have high reactivity without experiencing clinical anxiety.
Commonly misused online
Social media often conflates high amygdala reactivity with being 'broken' or 'damaged,' when it is actually a normal variation in temperament that exists on a spectrum and can be adaptive in certain contexts.
